Title: Help I need honest answere from knowledgeable owners
Post by: brazildan on November 13, 2010, 04:00:32 AM
My tenants in Florida just got a Cane Corso.  The house has a fenced yard about 20'x40' and I keep a small apartment in back for use by family and friends, I am from NJ.  Access to the apartment is from a back gate into the yard.  Since we do not live there I am afraid we may be perceived as intruders by the dog.  My parents are in their 80's and will be going in Feb. and my step-daughter, her 4 year old, her boyfriend and his 5 and 8 year old sons will be visiting over Easter.  Is this a safe situation?

Interesting situation.  The way the dog is raised will determine the answer, not just the breed.  If the dog is well socialized and the visitors are introduced to the dog by the owners, there should be no problem.  If any of them is afraid of dogs, that will make it more challenging.  Worst case, ask the tenant to accompany the dog while it's out in the yard for the duration of your stay.  I sincerely doubt that you have a "dangerous' situation, but your concern is legitimate.  It all comes down to the owners...

Thank you for responding.  My wife is afraid of all large dogs and I wonder if anyone might not be initially afraid of a 150 lb. dog in an enclosed area.  I also have a labrador about 50 lbs. and a 15 lb. Jack Russell mix who thinks she can take on any size animal.  How do they react to other dogs?  More replies from others would be greatly appreciated.

About 5 months now I think.  It will be another 2 or 3 months before I would bring my dogs there.

I agree with Ron, the owners are going to play the most important role in this situation. If the owners researched and studied the breed before making their purchase they should understand the amount of commitment and socialization these dogs take to raise properly. That said, each dog is different and has its own personality so each must be treated accordingly. If the owners socialize the dog correctly and have a stable temperament to begin with, there is no reason why things wouldn't work out. Again the onus is on the owners.

If you are still concerned, have your tenet purchase an outdoor kennel. In addition to a fenced in yard, I also have 5'x'10'x6'ft  kennel outside in case I want to separate dogs or if I have a friend or family visiting with another dogs (just another idea).

You are not going to be dealing with a 150 lb dog at 7-8 months old, rest assured.  150 lb Corsos are few and far between and they mature slowly.  You should be looking at a 75-90 pound big goofy puppy if all goes well.  Now would be a good time to get a feel for what the tenants have been up to with the dog, so that they have time to prepare for your visit.
